BCI has been serving MnDOT for several years now as MnDOT updates their infrastructure to serve roads, their staff, and the needs on Minnesota civilians. Their structures are all unique, however they have many similar services. MnDOT also utilizes a unique procurement process to allow us, as contractors, to show our skill set in alternative solutions. Often considered a performance specification, MnDOT publishes documents for the lowest qualified bid while showing and stating expectations of the facility. Traditionally, they define the main structure type, often precast and steel super structure, and state minimum specifications for unique pieces (such as precast panels, steel super structure, accessory structures, etc.).
We then present estimates and inclusions (building systems, solutions, etc.) as equal or equivalent products. If accepted, MnDOT has us join Oertel Architects (or others) to finalize their construction documents identifying things that are unique to those systems (i.e. how different precast systems or steel structure terminate). Permitting is often the greatest risk, but maneuverability is a strength for both parties to deliver a great, but smart product.
BCI has now served MnDOT in many locations and has earned the respect of a high expectation client in locations like Wilmar, Hawley, Grand Marais, and Clearwater. There is a certain sense of pride being achieved when creativity is exhausted, assisting the final design processes, and ultimately controlling outcomes in a rigid environment. Our teams love the work and the client. We look forward to serving them for years to come.
